Home Away From Home

A family at Swansea, not just a membership card.

ACS already says it out loud: this society is a home away from home. This programme is the welfare side of that promise, for new students, international students, and anyone who misses their people.

  1. 1

    Land

A welcome table in the first weeks: food, faces, and someone who will not quiz you on your whole life story.

  2. 2

    Learn the city

Which bus joins Singleton and Bay, where to find food that tastes like home, and which ACS partners the society already trusts.

  3. 3

    Get a buddy

A student who answers ordinary questions for a few weeks. Not a counsellor. You can pause it without an essay.

  4. 4

    Stay

Circles, football and socials so “home” is not only Freshers’ Week. Homesickness is allowed in February too.

The buddy system

Buddies are paired by the welfare team. Expect a message, a coffee or a walk, and help with the unglamorous bits: printers, prayer space, where the cheap shop is, how a society social actually feels before you walk in.

Who it helps: first years, international students, and anyone in a lonely patch. The named programme is Swansea BuddyUp.

What you can expect: light contact. Honesty if your buddy is busy. A new match if the first one does not fit. No romantic matchmaking and no pressure to attend every event.

International Student Welcome Pack

A short pack for the first nights: campuses, emergency numbers, how ACS welfare works, and a note on using official University advice for visas, never a rumour in the group chat.

The University’s international team is at swansea.ac.uk/international. The pack sits beside that, it does not replace it.

What “home” is allowed to mean

Hair, food, faith, language, and the right to be quiet. ACS socials already celebrate culture. Home Away From Home makes sure the students who are struggling still have a seat, including the ones who are not ready to dance.

Ask for a buddy or offer to be one

Say whether you want a buddy, a welcome pack, or to volunteer. Mention Singleton, Bay, or both.
